Happy National Video Games Day!

Happy National Video Games Day!

With National Video Games day right around the corner, we focus our attention to the long running rivalry between the FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) franchises as they both gear up to release the latest instalments of their football games.

So which one would you purchase?

To the casual gamer, EA Sports’ FIFA 16 would seem like the safest choice. Ripe with official licenses, rafts of teams from a generous number of leagues as well as a polished and user-friendly interface, FIFA has had its nose ahead of its closest competitor in recent years.

Konami produced PES 2016 on the other hand, relies more heavily on its gameplay, which is what has kept the series alive against the much bigger budget of FIFA. Die-hard fans have kept loyal to the widely perceived purer, pick up and play nature of the series, ignoring the fact that Liverpool for example are known in the game as Merseyside Red!

Some have described this battle of gaming giants as one of style vs. substance, which lends to an interesting debate as to whether brands nowadays are adopting a style over substance approach. Millions are spent each year on lavish ad campaigns for example, which, undoubtedly grab the attention, but how often do they touch consumers at a personal level?

Should brands therefore be allocating more of their spend on a more engaging approach, such as local experiential marketing?
