Video on Facebook: Does YouTube really have a new rival?

Back in May, we told you about our favourite trends of 2015 so far, and we mentioned the rise of video content. Facebook now has an estimated 3 billion video views per day and 65% of these come from mobile devices. To be frank, video content is officially King, so much so that Facebook is now considered by some as a new rival of YouTube, the biggest online video platform.

Despite growing user numbers elsewhere, Facebook still dominates the world of social media with a total of 1.44 billion active users worldwide as of the first quarter of 2015.

When Facebook launched the new autoplay feature for videos on the platform, it really upped its game in the video world and we can now seen that video posts recieve higher engagement than photos, the former content favourite. Don’t get us wrong, YouTube is still the driving force for video content, not only is it the go-to place for cat videos and prank fails, it’s the favourite for brands to share their work and advertise, especially taking advantage of the non skip option. Video content from YouTube works well for SEO and as YouTube is essentially a search engine, everything is easy to find and share and even embed on external sites. But Facebook is starting to catch up.

Brand pages now have the option to add featured videos to their feeds which, in turn, can be promoted to reach a wider audience. This allows brands to experiment with video on different platforms to guage ROI and engagement levels, meaning YouTube isn’t necessarily the ‘go-to’ for video sharing anymore.

Facebook still has a long way to go before it catches up with the video giants but it’s certainly on its way. It’s just really a matter of time and seeing whether or not this latest Facebook trend will stay.
